This is ‘the’ place to come in Uganda to see the famous population of around 350 mountain gorillas. We’ll help advise you on the best places to stay to get up close to the gorillas and make the most of your trip.
Bwindi is also a secretive home for other primate species, including black-and-white colobus monkey, L’Hoest’s monkey, red-tailed monkey, blue monkey, vervet monkeys and baboons. In addition there are 79 mammal species including duiker, elephant, bushbuck, bush pig, giant forest hog and several small cat species that will keep you company as you explore the remote area.
Located at the very southern point of Uganda, in the valley of the Great Rift Valley, Bwindi Forest covers 32,000 ha and is known for its exceptional biodiversity, with more than 160 species of trees and over 100 species of ferns. Many types of birds and butterflies can also be found there, as well as many endangered species, including the Mountain Gorillas, which will no doubt be the reason for your visit.
When to go
September is deemed the 'best time' but Bwindi is generally good for sightings year round. Slight advantage in the months of June to August as the rainfall is reduced slightly. Wet seasons are March-May and October-early December.
