The Serengeti is a vast area of around 12,000 square miles, spread over a number of reserves and areas. Its most famous residents are undoubtedly the million strong herds of wildebeest and zebra that form the Great Migration. Depending on what time of year you choose to visit, you have the opportunity to be perfectly positioned to watch this spectacle unfold.
The North Serengeti – an area of untamed natural beauty, rolling hills, open plains, rivers and forests – forms the border with the equally famous Maasai Mara of Kenya. This is the region where the herds are at their most concentrated during the migration, and it’s where (if you’re lucky) you’ll get to witness the dramatic river crossings that make this migration popular.
Not only is this the prime region to possibly see migration river crossings, but it also perfectly positions you to combine your visit to Tanzania with a safari in Kenya. There are a wealth of fantastic accommodation options in both this country and its neighbour, meaning you’ll find yourself enjoying the unforgettable beauty of nature while surrounded by luxury.
This part of the Serengeti is relatively quiet compared to elsewhere, so while the game might not be as plentiful, you will often find yourself having the expanse of wilderness all to yourself. The migration generally passes through between September and October, but there is plenty to see still if you visit during the rest of the year. It’s here that you’ll find a majority of the park’s elephants, in Lobo specifically. And there are several large prides of lions to be found in the Lobo Hills. Keep an eye out for spotted hyenas, leopards and cheetahs as well.
Along the northeastern border of Serengeti National Park you’ll find the Loliondo Game Controlled Area where the Maasai people graze their cattle alongside the local wildlife. One of the largest concessions in the area is Klein’s Camp, where visitors can enjoy excellent game viewing, night drives and safari bush walks.

When to visit
Tanzania is an amazing destination to visit all year round, but if you’re after the Great Migration, visit between June and July. The iconic river crossings take place from August to October and calves are born at the start of the year, with up to 8000 born daily during February.
