Find Kenya’s big tuskers in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro

Amboseli is famous for its exceptional views of the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro that towers over the park from neighbouring Tanzania. The National Park itself has a thriving elephant population who wander the plains below the snow-capped Kilimanjaro and create one of Africa’s most recognizable sights. The glaciers that cling to the high-altitude peaks of Kilimanjaro melt when temperatures rise and the waters flow into the park creating year-round life-giving swamps that enrich the land and quench the thirst of the game that resides here.

Amboseli landscapes are typical of this part of Kenya, there’s acacia trees and rocky thorn bushes which provide sustenance and shade to the variety of game. There are great herds of zebras, buffalos and antelopes that feed the greed of the predators that hunt them. Lions and cheetahs are often found lazing about in the midday heat and if you’re keen eyed you might even spot a leopard’s tail swishing as it watches you from the treetops.

Surrounding Amboseli are ranch areas where the Maasai graze their cattle and share the terrain with the wildlife. When you visit Amboseli you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the Maasai way of life. Many guides in this region are Maasai and will share their stories as you adventure into remote areas together, seeking out wildlife encounters.

I love Amboseli National Park, a little off the beaten path and full of huge elephants. There’s also plenty of other great wildlife to find, including all the big five. There’s some great camps here too, and the views of Mount Kilimanjaro are spectacular.
