A modern city with interesting sights and a vibrant social scene
The largest city in Morocco, Casablanca stands proud on the Atlantic coast. It is the country’s chief port and financial, commercial and manufacturing centre. One of the most modern cities in Africa with office buildings and big-city traffic, it may not have much in common with the eponymous film starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, but it does have a few interesting sights for visitors along with a vibrant social scene and rich architectural heritage.
One of the most notable sights is the enormous Hassan II Mosque which was completed in 1993. Standing at 210 metres, its minaret is the world’s tallest. Aesthetically, Casabalanca’s French colonial legacy is evident in its downtown Mauresque architecture, a blend of Moorish style and European art deco.
Wander down cobbled alleys in the Old Medina and discover museums, shops selling traditional keepsakes and fascinating palaces waiting to be explored. Near to the Hassan II Mosque, the beach-front district of La Corniche boasts a variety of restaurants and entertainment options.
Spend some time beneath the trees at Parc de la Ligue Arabe. Designed in 1918, it is Casablanca’s biggest open space. It’s perfect for games and walks, and boasts a variety of small cafés.
