Africa's most beautiful and pristine beaches

Mozambique stretches along the Indian Ocean with a long coastline of soft sand and warm, turquoise waters. Offshore, low-lying islands protect coral reefs and seagrass beds that support some of the richest marine life in southern Africa.

From the mainland, it’s an easy, short flight or private boat ride to the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago, a protected national park known for clear water and healthy reefs. You can snorkel in shallow lagoons close to shore alongside tropical fish and turtles feeding over coral gardens. You might spot pods of dolphins moving between islands. From June to October, humpback whales migrate along the coastline. And the archipelago also supports one of the last remaining populations of dugongs in the western Indian Ocean.

On the mainland, towns such as Vilanculos have a quiet rhythm, with fishing boats pulled up on the sand and local markets selling fresh prawns, nuts and produce. From the beach, crews take you out by boat for island picnics, dhow sailing and snorkelling trips during the day.

A Mozambique tour works well as part of a longer itinerary. It offers an uncomplicated, relaxing add-on to a larger safari tour in southern Africa, moving from big game reserves to the quiet luxury of the coast with ease.

Our travel designers can help you plan your bespoke Mozambique tour. Speak with our team to start planning a journey that fits naturally into your wider travels through southern Africa.

    Highlights

End a safari journey relaxing on Mozambique’s Indian Ocean coast, shifting pace after the bush

Snorkel shallow reefs in the Bazaruto Archipelago, spotting turtles, reef fish and dolphins

Sail between islands by traditional dhow, stopping for picnics on empty beaches or in the shallows

Spot humpback whales along the coast between June and October, from the boat or shore

Explore coastal life in Vilanculos, from fishing boats and markets to locally influenced cuisine

I love how quickly you go from the mainland to the water, splashing straight off the boat into the warm shallows of the Indian Ocean. Snorkelling here is calm and unrushed and the marine life is rich. Paired with a safari in one of southern Africa's big game reserves, it creates such a satisfying mix of wild nature and rejuvenation.

    When to visit Mozambique

August and September are late winter in Mozambique — a good time of year if you’re combining Bazaruto with a southern African safari, when dry conditions support better wildlife viewing. The dry season runs from May to October, bringing warm days, calmer seas and more settled conditions along the coast. Diving and fishing are strongest from May to September, when visibility improves and marine activity increases.
