At a glance

For those who want to truly disconnect from the pings, tweets, emails and vibrations of the modern world, without sacrificing any of the comfort, immerse yourself in true African wilderness in Botswana.

Delve into an untamed and exclusive luxury safari in Botswana where for nine days you awake to the sound of nature, not notifications, and where the only social networks you’ll interact with are those of wild animals, indigenous communities and expert guides.

Begin by meeting your expert naturalist guide in the small town of Maun where you’ll board a light aircraft and fly out deep into the Okavango Delta, one of the most iconic ecosystems in Africa.

Head back to the times of the original Western explorers on an exquisitely luxurious mobile safari for six days, discovering the remotest areas of the Delta and Moremi Game Reserve. A patchwork of permanent waters, seasonal wetlands and islands covered in forests and Savannah, this region is home to an incredible array of animals. Elephants are in abundance, along with buffalo, lion, leopard, African wild dog, giraffe and cheetah. Numerous antelope species abound, as do hundreds of bird species. You’ll head out to meet the wild residents on game drives, bush walks and boating trips, learning about this unique environment and reconnecting with nature.

Your camp is a throwback to the 1920s, with traditional canvas tents, wrought iron beds and thick feather bedding, all lit by paraffin lamps. Start the days with freshly baked bread and full English breakfasts, indulge at tea time and take three course dinners out under the stars each night. All without a hint of Wi-Fi or mobile signal to distract you from now.

Next, fly south and east to the lunar landscapes of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans in the middle of the central Kalahari desert. There are few places on earth as empty, the vast nothingness and all encompassing horizon a place to get a truer sense of scale and self reflect. You’ll be staying at one of the most unique camps in Africa – the legendary Jack’s Camp, owned and run by Ralph Bousfield. An oasis right out on the pans, it too harkens back to simpler, intrepid and more glamorous age of safari, with antique furniture, superb dining and impeccable hospitality.

This area is about more than game viewing – in fact for most of the year very little ventures out this far from the lush Delta. Instead it is about exploring the landscape, the isolated rocky outcrops and ancient baobabs, and learning about the traditions and skills of the bushmen, an incredible people who have survived in this otherworldly place for millennia.

Delta Tented Mobile Camp: Day 2 Delta Tented Mobile Camp: Day 2

Breakfast in the first light of day and head out in the safari vehicles for your introduction to some of the animals of the dry floodplain environment, looking for zebra, wildebeest, impala and predators such as wild dog and cheetah. Return to camp for lunch and a siesta. Head out for sundowners after consuming an embarrassingly large spread of tea and cakes. Park at the edge of a lagoon and watch herds of elephant and a myriad of birds coming down to drink whilst the sun sets and you are given an informal talk on the geological history of the area. Return to camp for a sumptuous dinner.

Delta Tented Mobile Camp: Day 3 Delta Tented Mobile Camp: Day 3

After breakfast, take a slow drive to the lagoon’s edge and board a boat to explore the waters of the delta. The deep open lagoons provide a wonderful contrast in habitat after the dry forest areas and floodplains of your first camp. Float along the maze of channels, stopping to admire rare birds and the diversity of aquatic life. Spot small crocodiles basking in the sun on sparkling white sandbanks and hippos jousting for territories with spectacular splashes and clashes of jaws. Learn about the ecology of the waters and look at all the important components of the ecosystem. Have a picnic lunch on a sandy bank in the river and cool off at a safe swimming spot. Arrive at your private, lantern-lit camp on an island, deep in the delta, just after sunset. Shower and relax around the fire before dinner under the stars. Sleep in a mosquito net tent and bask in the freedom of a night in the open, surrounded by nature at her very best.

Delta Tented Mobile Camp: Day 4 Delta Tented Mobile Camp: Day 4

Rise early and after a short walk around the island, hop back into your boat for a meander through the waterways, absorbing the tranquility of the lagoons and narrow, papyrus-fringed, hippo trails. This will allow you to immerse yourself completely in the incredible spectacles that the delta has to offer. Search out hippo and bathing elephants to understand the importance of the Okavango to these enormous creatures. Marvel at the majesty of elephants from only a few yards away as they wash and feed on the roots of aquatic plants. Drifting back to the vehicles, you’ll have a picnic and siesta in the arms of a giant shady baobab. Spend the afternoon seeking out hyena dens and, as the day cools down, watch for hunting cats. Head on to camp for a refreshing shower and delectable dinner.

Delta Tented Mobile Camp: Day 5 Delta Tented Mobile Camp: Day 5

After a hearty breakfast, head out for the whole day to explore the wider area around your second camp. Search out the creatures and plants typical of the ecosystem and explore the interrelationships of species and the systems in which they live. Seek out the elusive predators such as lion, cheetah and leopard and observe and interpret their behaviour. Picnic and siesta under a shady mangosteen. Spend your afternoon observing even more of your favourite species. Leopard spotting, lion tracking, cheetah chasing and dog discovering. If you want to watch lions mating for two hours or prefer to watch bee eaters hawking insects on the wing, then so be it. Return to camp for dinner - tired, but happy.

Say your farewells to the camp before you are transferred out of the Delta.
