While we strive for sustainability in all our luxury safaris, we’ve singled out these award-winning ecolodges not only for minimising their environmental footprint, but also for their pioneering wildlife conservation projects and, importantly, support of and cooperation with local communities and culture.
Begin in the Samburu region and the gorgeous Moroccan tents of Sasaab Lodge. The river that runs by attracts rich game and northern specialities such as Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Gerenuk antelope and Somali ostrich, as well as local Samburu herders and their flock. The Samburu here own the land the lodge sits on, earning an income in a way that encourages the protection of the landscape. The majority of staff and guides are local, so you can be assured of an intimate and genuine cultural experience on village visits, camel rides and walks – a truly special introduction to Kenya.
Next, head south to the green Chyulu Hills at Campi ya Kanzi, the only safari lodge on a Maasai-owned reserve spanning 283,000 acres of pristine wilderness, back-dropped by Mount Kilimanjaro. The luxury here comes from sharing the vast landscape – dotted with wandering elephants, lions and giraffes – with at most 15 other guests, and from the unforgettable experience of tracking wildlife with a Maasai guide through his own land. Preserving wildlife, wilderness and culture has been central to the lodge for years.
End on the iconic plains of the Masai Mara at the unique Cottar’s 1920s Camp. Family-run and based on community owned land, Cottar’s Camp works in partnership with the Maasai here and has funded a number of projects including a school, footbridge and anti-poaching efforts, protecting a vital corridor for the great migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra between the Serengeti and the Mara’s plains. Witnessing this incredible spectacle is the greatest finale to any Kenyan safari.

Overview
Located on the edge of the Ewaso River in a pristine wilderness within the Westgate Community Conservancy, the lodge boasts some fantastic views and is perfectly located to give you some amazing game sightings. If you want to get involved in activities, there is a huge variety of things to get involved with but otherwise, ‘Spa Saab’ will look after you in calming treatment rooms and it even offers yoga. What’s more, Sasaab is involved in many projects with the local Samburu tribe and runs many sustainability initiatives.
Each of the nine distinctive open-walled rooms are furnished with a Moroccan flair with simple but elegant trimmings. They are extremely spacious (over 100sqm each) with west facing verandas and their own private plunge pools overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River. You’re higher up and closer to the Sahara here, so it can get very warm, but the lodge has been built to provide respite from the heat. The open tented rooms are airy and your plunge pool is just a short stroll from your bed.
The family unit is ideal for two couples travelling together as well as families. This luxurious suite is spacious, featuring one en-suite double room and one en-suite twin room with a communal lounge and private plunge pool.
The main dining area is reminiscent of a souk and is great for a lazy afternoon watching the game frequent the river below.
The lodge has a strong relationship with the hundreds of families that live on and own the conservancy and they are very proud to give guests to the lodge a special insight into their daily lives. These cultural experiences are non intrusive and if you’re lucky, they might even invite you to see a genuine traditional ceremony in the village. Trips to the local Samburu markets take place twice a week and are not to be missed.

- Sasaab is among the 10 properties awarded the Global Ecosphere Retreat certification, a rigorous benchmark in sustainable tourism recognised by The Long Run and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. This accreditation highlights their dedication to promoting holistic sustainability in all aspects of their business operations.
- Sasaab contributes to the Westgate Conservancy, a collaborative initiative with the local Samburu community, paying lease fees that support wildlife conservation and sustainable coexistence. Through partnerships and support for local wildlife NGOs, Sasaab participates in projects like sponsoring Rothchild’s giraffe and the Mara Predator Conservation Programme. This program focuses on researching threats faced by local predators like lions and cheetahs, developing science-based community conservation solutions to protect them.
- Sasaab’s collaboration with the community has significantly impacted culture, community, and conservation. Besides paying conservation and bed night fees to the Westgate Conservancy, Sasaab’s Footprint Foundation manages social projects. These include providing free school lunches to over 1000 children, running a conservation scholars program, and addressing community issues like HIV/AIDS prevention. The foundation also campaigns against female genital mutilation and gender-based violence.
Enjoy the stunning wildlife and captivating cultural encounters with the local Samburu tribes in the Samburu region. Take bush walks in between your daily safari game drives (some at night), visits to the local Samburu villages, camel-back riding, evenings of sundowners, gourmet food and campfire stories, and all in the serene and sumptuous luxury of your lodge.
Visit one of the neighbouring villages to gain an insight into the culture of the Samburu people and how they survive in this harsh environment. A humbling and inspiring experience.
Setting off at dawn, you will drive to the foot of Ololokwe (30 minutes from the lodge). Whatever your pace, our guides will be at your side throughout, teaching you about the mountain and all of its wonders. Half way to the top you will stop for a Saruni breakfast of eggs, bacon, fruit and pancakes with tea or coffee. Now, full of energy, you will reach the top and admire the magnificent view of Samburuland. You begin your descent with the prospect of a delicious lunch of fresh pasta and salads in the shade of the ancient moran’s cave.

Overview
Views over Mount Kilimanjaro. Rolling hills, and open plains. A community project with strong connections to the local Masai farmers. Campi ya Kanzi (camp of the hidden treasure) is truly a special experience. There is a conscious focus on promoting environmental conservation and sustainable community development here.
Located within the Mbirikani Group Ranch which extends over 283,000 acres of land, this lodge is a perfect complement to a Masai Mara game experience. The landscape is great for a variety of plains game and of course, is home to a whole Maasai community.
There are just six en-suite luxury tented rooms in the camp, alongside two beautiful suites which are all raised up on wooden platforms with thatched roofs, keeping in line with the eco-feel of the lodge. The camp is actually centred around Tembo House which has a veranda overlooking the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro and the Tsavo Hills. Perfect for a relaxing evening, Tembo House is an open plan dining/living room constructed from local materials and is where you can enjoy your freshly prepared Italian or local cuisine.
Kanzi House is an additional exclusive property which is absolutely private. With a maximum capacity of just ten per group, it is ideal for families and can cater for six adults and four children. With a large 18-metre swimming pool, Kanzi House offers an almost resort like experience that is in line with the eco-credentials that this lodge boasts.
Your hosts, Antonella and Luca, are passionate about Kenya and are keen to give you a really unique experience. They have their own Cessna 206 which can be hired privately to get you to the lodge and boasts views that many scenic flights charge extra for.
→ Find out moreAs well as game drives out on the huge reserve, you can explore the area on foot accompanied by Maasai guides. Take longer day hikes across the hills and plains, or up into the magical Chyulu Cloud Forest, learning to read the signs of the animals and ending in a traditional tented fly camp under a baobab tree for the night far from any human presence. You can also go for dawn horseback rides, take scenic flights over the snows of Kilimanjaro or even practice Transcendental Meditation with an experienced teacher.
Enjoy riding through the quintessential and game rich East African landscapes - vast savannah plains, acacia forests and undulating slopes of the Chyulu Hills. Within this area reside some of Africa's most magnificent creatures including elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo not to mention hundreds of species of birds and a huge variety of plant life. This ride never fails to provide ample opportunity for fast and varied riding, and your adventure will be tailored to your confidence level.
Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the seven summits - the highest mountains on each of the world's seven continents. It has three volcanic cones, of which Kibo is the largest. The summit is named Uhuru Peak which means freedom, aptly named in 1961 when Tanganyika gained its independence. Kilimanjaro stands at 5,895m high and is the highest freestanding mountain in the world.

Overview
Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp is located within a beautiful community-owned concession close to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve and the Kenyan border, a timeless setting with incredible views over the game covered plains that surround it. Adding an extra layer to this camp is the fact that is closely involved with local community and conservation efforts, meaning that your stay is benefitting many.
The camp itself, colonial in style with dark woods, swathes of canvas and antique pieces, is made up of ten tents, spaced out to ensure privacy. Of the ten, four are family suites with their own living rooms and fireplaces and there also a unique honeymoon suite. All have en-suite showers and safari baths and showers can be set up in the savannah for unforgettable ablutions.
Two main mess tents sit at the heart of Cottar’s with areas for fine dining, drinking, reading and relaxing. There’s also a swimming pool and spa.
The Cottar family have decades of experience here and they count the highest number of Gold (the highest professional level) Safari Guides within one camp in Kenya, each chosen for their unique skillset and personalities, meaning a safari here, whether on foot or game drives, is always a fantastic.
Cultural interaction with the local Maasai community, with whom the Cottars have worked in partnership with for years, is authentic and not at all touristy. The award-winning camp also has some of the highest ecotourism ratings going.
→ Find out moreThe Mara Conservancies surrounding the Masai Mara National Reserve offer visitors the ultimate safari: the lowest tourist densities; incredible day and night game viewing; walking safaris; and authentic cultural interactions. But above all, these Conservancies are managed according to a model that protects the delicate eco-system and benefits the landowners themselves – the Maasai people.
One evening you might choose to take the opportunity to join the Maasai warriors as they sing and dance around the campfire. Music and dance is an incredibly important part of Maasai culture and this is a chance to experience something very special.
Add an unforgettable experience to your stay in the Mara Conservancies and enjoy floating gently over the Maasai Mara in a hot air balloon. Wake before dawn with freshly brewed tea or coffee delivered right to your tent, and enjoy the fresh, early morning drive to one of the two launch sites within easy reach from the lodge. Watch as the balloon is slowly inflated before a quick and straightforward pre-flight briefing. Before you know it, the balloon is airborne and you're floating effortlessly above the Mara.
The soft, early morning breeze takes the balloon southwards towards the Tanzanian border, with the typical flight path along the Mara River and its adjoining forest, and over the open plains beyond. This is an unmatched safari - even the lions look up in surprise as the balloon sails overhead. A flight normally lasts around one hour, and ends with a sometimes-bumpy landing amidst the termite mounds, which is all part of the adventure. Once you’ve settled back to earth, toast the morning's activities with a celebratory champagne breakfast, specially prepared under a tree in the middle of nowhere.
