At a glance
Cut off from the African mainland well over 100 million years ago, the flora and fauna of Madagascar’s teeming forests have evolved independently. The result: nearly 80% of its species exist nowhere else on earth. Here there are some 12,000 endemic species of plants and around 270 bird species, almost half of which are endemic. Madagascar is known as the “Great Red Island”, because of the eroding soil that stains the rivers and deltas crimson, you travel in search of lemurs, chameleons, orchids, baobabs, aloes, geckoes, sifakas and octopus trees.
On this thrilling adventure you’ll go in search of some of the island’s rarest species. You’ll visit some of the most isolated, unique and far-flung areas of Madagascar in the hopes of ticking some super endangered creatures off your list. Your journey starts with a night in Antananarivo before you head off to Andasibe-Mantadia National Park where you’ll venture into the rainforest on foot. A visit to Vakona’s Lemur Island will give you the opportunity to interact with a variety of lemur species, and you’ll get to hera the haunting calls of the indri at Anamalazotra and VOI Community Park.
Your exploration will draw to a close with three nights in Anjajavy Reserve which is a protected area encompassing sea, coral reef, beaches, forest, mangrove, savannah, tumescent baobabs and jagged ‘Tsingy’ rock formations. The green forests are home to seven lemur species (including the elusive aye-aye), fossa, chameleons and a rich array of bird life.

Anjajavy Reserve
Overview
On a peninsula in north-west Madagascar that can only be reached by light aircraft, seemingly at the edge of the whole world, Anjajavy sits within a private portion of its own pioneering protected reserve, offering an incredibly authentic, up-close experience of nature.
Taking inspiration from traditional Sakalava villages, its 24 villas are elegantly constructed from rosewood and palm thatch, set facing the sea and surrounded by gardens. On the ground floor, each has a large veranda in front of a living area, bed and bathroom. A Japanese staircase leads up to a floor which can be used as a children’s bedroom. Silent air conditioning keeps the bedroom at an ideal temperature.
The cool tropical gardens, known as the Oasis, are rich with native flora and attract both relaxing guests and lemurs. Follow paths to secret beaches flanked by coral tsingy towers, or back into the jungle, perhaps on a guided night walk in search of pocket-sized mouse lemurs and slender-fingered aye-aye after a delightful gourmet dinner of fresh seafood and organic produce from local farmers.
You can also explore mangrove channels by kayak, go fishing, hiking, visit caves, go on guided nature and birdwatching walks, mountain bike, wind surf water ski and more. Excursions to local villages provide a unique insight into life in this remote corner of Madagascar and show how Anajajavy is benefitting the local community through a number of collaborative projects.
→ Find out moreThe 7,200 hectare Anjajavy Reserve in the remote north-west of Madagascar is a protected area encompassing sea, coral reef, beaches, forest, mangrove, savannah, tumescent baobabs and jagged ‘Tsingy’ rock formations. Created by Anjajavy Lodge, which sits at the heart of the reserve, it is a beautiful microcosm of the island, it is classified by the WWF as a global priority in terms of conservation that harbours rare and endemic flora and fauna, as well as a scattering of traditional villages which the lodge works closely with and supports. On land, green forests are home to seven lemur species (including the elusive aye-aye), fossa, chameleons and a rich array of bird life. You'll most likely see the resident family of Coquerel's sifaka dancing through the garden. Tree roots meet the turquoise sea in a network of mangroves, a wonderful place to kayak, whose channels lead out to a marine park where tropical fish, turtles and occasional dolphin and humpback whale abound. Other activities here include nature walks, mountain biking, boat trips, community visits, snorkelling and wind surfing.
