Whether you’re interested in nature, culture, adventure or a little bit of everything, we will explain the best things to do in Zambia promises a never-ending list of unforgettable experiences. This landlocked country in southern Africa promises a never-ending list of unforgettable experiences. It’s packed with national parks, remote wildlife areas, natural wonders and phenomenal lodges offering all manner of exciting activities, from daytime and nighttime game drives to safaris on foot or by boat.

Animal lovers will never be bored, thanks to the presence of not just the Big Five but dozens of other intriguing species as well. There’s also a diverse array of local traditions to learn about, as the country is home to more than 70 different ethnic groups.

Explore the birthplace of walking safaris

Today it’s possible to explore the wilderness on foot in many of Africa’s parks and reserves, but it was right here in South Luangwa National Park that this concept was conceived. Walking safaris in Zambia date back to the mid-twentieth century, when conservationist Norman Carr started promoting this highly immersive and low-impact form of tourism. Walking safaris are now offered all over the country, but they’re especially magical in South Luangwa.

Need to know: A walking safari may last anywhere from a couple of hours to several days, inviting you to experience the environment on a much closer level than game drives allow.

A male lion, part of the majestic big five species

See the Big Five

Zambia is home to all of the magnificent species that comprise the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffalo. Seeing these animals in their natural habitats is a classic safari experience and just as thrilling as it sounds. You can spot four of the five in Lower Zambezi National Park or Kafue National Park, but to see the elusive black rhino you’ll have to head to North Luangwa – the only one of the country’s 20 national parks that boasts all five species.

Need to know: The best time to visit Zambia for Big Five safaris is during the dry season (May to October) when the parks are most accessible and visibility is highest.

A night time game drive in Africa, beginning at sunset

Go on a game drive after dark

Although it makes sense that most safaris take place during daylight, there’s something uniquely enchanting about a nighttime game drive in Zambia. Things to do after dark are otherwise limited to stargazing and relaxing at camp, but some of our favourite lodges also offer evening safaris that allow you to observe nocturnal creatures and see the terrain in a different light. These game drives often occur at dusk so that you can watch the sunset over the bush.

Need to know: If you’re interested in experiencing a nighttime game drive, ask our travel designers to recommend a lodge where this activity is offered, such as Mchenja Bush Camp.

Devil's pool at Victoria Falls in Zambia, a natural infinity swimming pool

Swim up to the edge of Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Zambia, and for good reason. The Zambian side of the falls (as opposed to the Zimbabwean side) is particularly well known for its adventurous activities, including the chance to swim in Devil’s Pool. Essentially a natural infinity pool, this spectacular spot allows you to safely swim right up to the precipice, providing a truly unbeatable perspective of the falls – not to mention a jaw-dropping photo op.

Need to know: It’s only possible to swim in Devil’s Pool when water levels are low, so you’ll need to visit Victoria Falls between August and January if this is on your list.

A sunset cruise on the Zambezi river in Zambia

Cruise the Zambezi River at sunset

Picture yourself floating down the Zambezi River at twilight, watching as the light fades from the sky and bathes the landscape in a deep golden glow. A sunset cruise on the river is one of the most romantic and atmospheric experiences in all of Zambia, combining front-row views of the wildlife on shore with a leisurely pace that allows you to fully appreciate your surroundings. Most luxury river cruises also include drinks, hors d’oeuvres and exceptional service.

Need to know: Ila Safari Lodge stands out for its use of solar-powered electric boats, making river cruises much quieter and less intrusive thanks to the lack of a noisy motor.

Fish eagles, the national bird of Zambia

Spot rare and beautiful birds

Apart from its many majestic mammals, Zambia also boasts brilliant birdlife. More than 850 different species have been spotted here, and there are outstanding opportunities for birdwatching across the country. You might see the endemic Chaplin’s Barbet, the impressive Pel’s Fishing Owl, the elegant grey crowned crane or the colourful black-cheeked lovebird, depending on the time of year and the region you’re visiting.

Need to know: The best time for birding in Zambia is during the wet season from December to April, when the dense foliage attracts all kinds of migrating species.
