Rugged, untouched natural charm
Just a 20-minute flight from Bali, or a pleasant two-hour boat journey, Lombok is Bali’s considerably quieter little sister.
As part of a larger trip, the two islands complement each other very well; you’ll experience the style and culture of Bali teamed with the rugged seclusion and solitary beaches of Lombok. Very little of Lombok is developed, leaving its unhurried rural landscape of rice paddies, towering palms, sporadic and dense jungle, all under the imposing Mount Rinjani, blissfully untouched.
Lombok also boasts some of Indonesia’s most beautiful beaches. Suri Beach in the north and a number of white sandy bays in the south are favourites, far from touristy Sengiggi or the capital of Mataram.
The three Gili Islands, with only bicycles and horse and cart as transport, are within easy reach and promise some of the best diving and snorkelling in the region. Private boat trips can be arranged to discover secluded beaches at your leisure.
Highlights
Private boat trip in a traditional outrigger around the Gili Islands
Since Lombok means chilli – and if you like your food hot and spicy – try a Lombok Chilli Pepper
Visit the beautiful Sendang Gile Waterfall
Lombok is blessed with the same lush landscapes as Bali, but all the more secluded. I recommend hiking up to the crater rim of Mount Rinjani to see Segara Anak Lake sparkle in the early morning light. Or, set sail on a private traditional outrigger to explore the Gili Islands, with stops at some of the best coral reefs in the Lombok Strait.
