Burning mountains, modern architecture and ancient religions

With its bubbling mud volcanoes and dramatic burning mountains, Azerbaijan truly lives up to its nickname – the Land of Fire. Neighboured by Georgia, Armenia, Iran and Russia, the country is also a unique symphony of blended traditions and cultures – inviting you to create lasting memories on your private tour.

Once part of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan is a predominantly Muslim country, but it is also home to thriving Jewish and Christian communities. Spend time admiring Islamic, Baroque and Neoclassical architecture alongside ancient landmarks and ultra-modern structures in the capital city of Baku. Look out for the sweeping curves of the Heydar Aliyev Center, the fire-inspired Baku Flame Towers and the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum which does indeed look just like a rolled carpet.

There’s plenty to see and do in this exciting capital city, as well as great dining options. The city also has a variety of impressive luxury hotels to choose from and we’ll arrange private tours for you that are tailored to your interests.

Your adventurous discover of this country includes some spectacular natural marvels too. Azerbaijan has the world’s highest concentration of mud volcanoes, with some of the most popular being at Dashgil near the Gobustan Reserve, not too far from Baku. These volcanoes were formed by the shifting of tectonic plates which causes subterranean gases to escape. Every few decades it’s not uncommon for one of them to ignite beneath the surface, causing a huge explosion.

As the country’s nickname suggests, some of the gas leaks are permanently on fire, a phenomenon that is believed to be linked to the rise of the Zoroastrian religion around 2,000 years ago. The religion’s most important symbol of purity is fire, which also represents the god Ahura Mazda. Take time to visit the Ateshgah Zoroastrian Fire Temple in Baku and see the perpetually burning flames of Yanar Dag on the Absheron Peninsula on the Caspian Sea.
