Awaken all your senses in this welcoming city

An exhilarating combination of artists, aromatic dishes, tempting bazaars, galleries, museums and exquisite handcrafts – Azerbaijan’s charming capital Baku beckons. This pedestrian-friendly city is well suited to exploring on foot, so take your time wandering down streets and in and out of shops and stalls.

Make time for a carpet-weaving masterclass with skilled artisans in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Old City. You’ll get to craft your very own woven carpet, learning about the history of this artform as you work. If you want to deepen your knowledge of the industry even further, there’s a museum dedicated to all things woven, the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum.

Head about an hour out of town to Gobustan National Park where you’ll discover ancient rock paintings created by people seeking shelter in caves there as far back as 40,000 years. Another highlight that lies outside the city is Yanar Dag, or ‘burning mountain’. It is believed that the eternal fire has been burning for at least the last 5,000 years, and even inspired Azerbaijan’s early fire worshippers. Gas escapes from deep in the sandstone rocks and earth ensuring that the flame continues to burn.
