Lake Hovsgol, Mongolia

Double Lake Camp

Relax by the shores of one of the world’s most pristine lakes

A lakeside camp in one of Mongolia’s top beauty spots

Its azure waters surrounded by fragrant pines and snow-capped mountains, Lake Hovsgol conjures up the kind of pastoral postcard you’d be more likely to expect from the Swiss Alps than northern Mongolia. It’s known locally as the Blue Pearl, named for the vivid colour of its shimmering – and pristine – waters. It’s Mongolia’s deepest and largest lake, and has existed for more than two million years, now preserved within a national park. Remote and unspoiled, this far-flung haven is the perfect place to seek solace and relaxation.

Perched upon its lush shores is Double Lake Camp; a sought-after spot for those wishing to explore the area. Maintaining the quiet and unpopulated nature of its surroundings, the camp can welcome up to 45 guests at a time, spread across traditional gers, ten hotel rooms, and 2 spacious, A-frame houses. The interiors are minimalist yet comfortable, and each abode is positioned to allow for optimal privacy and proximity to nature. All meals are included, with the onsite restaurant serving up a blend of Mongolian and western cuisine.

The star of the show here, is of course, the lake, and there’s no better way to experience it than by canoe or kayak. Boating trips are available for those seeking something more laid back, and there are a number of horse riding, trekking and hiking routes to explore the forests which cascade down the hillside.
