When to go depends entirely on what it is you want to do, so our travel experts have rounded up their helpful advice on the best time to visit Austria.
The Best Time to Visit for...
Hiking
One of the most scenic places for hiking in Austria is the charming Lake District. Roughly starting in Salzburg and running south east to the peaks of the Dachstein mountains, this varied terrain offers endless possibilities when it comes to hiking. The Austrian Lakes are an enchanting blend of rolling verdant hills, sparkling waters and kaleidoscopic flowers. The summer months also bring opportunities for hiking in Tyrol, which is steeped in culture and known for its superb Italian-influenced food. For Austria’s best hiking, visit between June and August.
Winter Sports
Austria’s mountain ranges are unrivalled - from the Stubai to the Zillertal mountains, the opportunities for skiing in Austria are endless. Skiing through incredible landscapes is one of the most exhilarating ways to explore this Alpine country, with Austria having played host to the Winter Olympics twice before. In the Tyrol area, there are no less than five glaciers sitting alongside frozen lakes and snow capped peaks. These dramatic landscapes make for an excellent backdrop to a spot of cross country skiing. The ski season lasts from early December to late March, with skiing at its best in mid-January, the coldest time of the year.
Vienna
Although Vienna sees its best weather between June and August, the city can become extremely overcrowded during this time of year. To experience Vienna’s grandeur without the crowds, visiting in one of the two shoulder seasons is a great option. During Spring (April - May), temperatures are beginning to climb, and relaxing in one of the city’s many parks or coffee shops a truly pleasant experience thanks to fewer crowds. Autumn is also a great time to visit Vienna, with it being prime time to enjoy the city’s wine, culture and fall colours. If it’s old-world European Christmas charm you’re after though, Vienna’s Christmas markets are some of the best on the continent, running from November to December each year.
Culture
It’s possible to go sightseeing in Austria year round, but temperatures are at their most pleasant from May to September. July and August can become overcrowded, so it’s worth bearing this in mind if you’re looking forward to exploring landmarks with minimal crowds. Austria is a country filled with culture, from Vienna’s palaces and art galleries to Salzburg’s homage to The Sound of Music. Whatever time of year you visit, any history and culture enthusiast is sure to find something they’ll never forget in Austria.
