A feast for the senses

Undeniably one of the best destinations in France for exceptional produce and world-class gastronomy, Lyon offers a feast for all the senses. Set between the Rhône and Saône rivers in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the town itself has history that dates back some 2,000 years, with stunning architecture that tells the stories of the passage of time. Ancient buildings and modern structures stand side by side.

Go exploring and you’ll discover the Roman Amphithéâtre des Trois Gaules and mediaeval architecture in Vieux (Old) Lyon. Wander down historic streets and you’ll find numerous traboules, covered passageways leading to cool, quiet courtyards between buildings. No matter where you are in the city, a glance upwards will almost certainly reward you with views of the beautiful Basicila of Notre-Dame de Fourvière set proudly on a hilltop. Built in the late 19th century, the neo-Byzantine basilica offers some of the most incredible views of the city.

When it comes to dining, the echoes of traditional meeting contemporary amplify. While away the hours at family-owned bouchons, tucking into wholesome Lyonnaise cuisine in the older parts of town. Menus are filled with local signatures such as saucisson (dry-cured sausage) and quenelles (fish dumplings) as well as the region’s very own pink pralines, believed to date back to the 18th century. And don’t miss a visit to Halles de Lyon – Paul Bocuse, a large covered market filled with stalls and restaurants featuring regional specialities and produce.

When to visit

France is one of Europe’s most popular destinations, and spring, summer and autumn are the best times to visit. You’ll find some restaurants close during August so it’s best to avoid this month if you’re after a foodie -themed trip. There are some lovely markets around Christmas time and plenty of galleries and museums to explore if you’re visiting during the cooler months.
