Lyngen Alps
The pristine Lyngen Alps lie on a peninsula high above the Arctic Circle, just east of the city of Tromsø. Although a dream destination for adventure seekers, the remote location of the range means that you’re guaranteed a stay with an exclusive feel.
This sparkling mountain range rises directly from the fjord below them, contrasting dramatically with the blue waters and glaciers, gleaming mountain lakes, cascading rivers and deep ravines of the area. The region’s main town, Lyngseidet, is a pretty, well-kept coastal village with colorful old houses, shops and cafes.
The conditions are colder than the Alpine regions of Europe, providing opportunities for excellent skiing, dog sledding and snowmobiling in winter. These tall peaks are popular among experienced mountain climbers, but there’s also gently sloping hills and mountain plateaux ideal for hiking and bike riding in the summer, when fishing in fjords, lakes and rivers and scuba diving is also possible.
When to go
Visit in winter for northern lights and experience midnight sun in the summer.
