The remote southern tip of Chile’s Aysén region, this is a wilderness defined by its dramatic landscapes, towering peaks, and vast ice fields. South Aysén offers breathtaking views of fjords, glacial lakes and snow-capped mountains, giving you a sense of being in one of the most pristine places on Earth. The renowned Laguna San Rafael National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is a highlight, where you can witness massive glaciers calving into turquoise waters – a truly unforgettable sight. Access to South Aysén is a little more limited than the northern part of the region, and the weather is some of Patagonia’s more extreme.
Hiking trails abound, from accessible paths in national parks like Cerro Castillo to challenging treks that lead to breathtaking viewpoints overlooking the sprawling Patagonian wilderness. One of the undisputed main highlights of the region are the Marble Caves on General Carrera Lake, where intricate marble formations meet glistening turquoise waters. Over thousands of years, the marble deposits have been carved away, the stunning turquois waters reflecting the colours and patterns in the marble cave walls.
Guided boat tours and kayaking excursions offer you the opportunity to explore the glacier-strewn landscapes, while the rugged terrain invites trekking adventures. If you’re in search of a more peaceful escape, the untouched forests and crystal-clear rivers are perfect for fishing and nature photography.
Wildlife and conservation are integral to South Aysén’s character and a visit to Patagonia National Park is definitely a highlight. One of the most ecologically diverse parts of Chile, it’s home to rare species like the Andean fox, huemul, puma, rhea and the Andean condor. South Aysén’s nature reserves and protected areas, where dense forests and icy waters create habitats for unique flora and fauna are a dream for birdwatchers.
