Monteverde Lodge

Rainforest living

An oasis amid the jungle with thoughtful hospitality

Set on the edge of the thriving Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve within the Tilarán Mountain Range, this lodge embraces and is embraced by the natural world around it. Surrounding the property is a vast and varied landscaped garden, which is overlooked by its 28 bright and breezy bedrooms. Each one has a balcony or terrace for relaxing outdoors, and spacious bathrooms with double vanity sinks.

You needn’t go too far to find a little Costa Rican wildlife, as plenty of the country’s bright and beautiful birds enjoy the gardens at this leafy lodge, so spend a few hours lounging by the pool to watch hummingbirds hover over the floral displays. When it’s time to eat, El Jardin restaurant has the goods: expect breakfasts of pancakes and eggs and french toast, light lunches of sea bass ceviche or trout salad, and warming dinners of curried soup and roasted pumpkin. There’s even an entirely plant-based menu for those who prefer a dairy and meat-free diet.

Conscious and thoughtful hospitality is the focus here, with community outreach efforts and local recycling projects funded by your stay.

The impact of your stay:

  • Collectively, the Böëna Wilderness Lodges: Lapa Rios, Pacuare Lodge, Tortuga Lodge, Monteverde Lodge & Gardens, and Cloud Forest Lodge own and protect over 800 hectares of primary and secondary forest in crucial areas near national parks and biological corridors.
  • Monteverde Lodge collaborates with the Hacienda Comunidad Group, actively engaging in biweekly meetings and resource investments to address social and environmental challenges. The lodge also supports Escape Monteverde, a non-profit organisation, through monthly donations. Escape Monteverde utilises these contributions to offer mental health services, including camps, youth meetings, and employment training for teenagers.
  • Monteverde Lodge relies on 47 solar panels for most of its power, showcasing Costa Rica’s leadership in renewable energy. The lodge emphasises effective waste management with two composting methods and offers a unique waste system tour for guests. Staff regularly assist the local recycling centre as part of their routine duties.

Places to combine Monteverde Lodge with

The Guanacaste Coast

Four Seasons Papagayo
Occupying the entire Papagayo Peninsula on Costa Rica’s northwestern Guanacaste coast this hotel’s facilities are extensive and feature four restaurants, three pools, a championship-size golf course, tennis courts, spa and a collection of stand-alone villas. Papagayo is a vivid green spit of land that winds into the Pacific blue, decorated with idyllic golden beaches of which the hotel has direct access to two. The hotel’s 182 guest rooms, suites and villas are smart and luxurious, incorporating lots of Costa Rican and tropical style with the use of bamboo, rattan, solid wood furniture, shuttered windows and doors. Stone finishes and beige tones are broken up by the occasional vivid splash of colour. There are three categories of accommodation; the guest rooms are housed in three small individual buildings on both sides of the peninsula and the hotel’s facilities and pools are a five-minute stroll away. The treehouse-like canopy suites are elevated for views over the dry tropical forest canopy down to the water and some have their own plunge pools. However, if you’re after privacy and tranquillity then the residences equipped like a proper home with kitchen, infinity pool and two or three bedrooms are ideal. There’s also plenty to keep you entertained and much to help you unwind; a range of activities and private excursions direct from the hotel can be organised and the spa offers an array of body and facial treatments.
