The Central Cloud Forests, Costa Rica

Cloud Forest Lodge

Immersed in nature

Stay wild at one of Costa Rica’s best cloud forest lodges

With just 25 suites, this lodge is an intimate space to relax amid the spectacular jungle of Costa Rica’s cloud forest reserves. Sandwiched between the Monteverde Reserve and the Santa Elena Reserve, it’s ideally placed for getting out on the trails to meet the country’s most enchanting wildlife, from the resplendent quetzal to sleepy sloths.

Suites here are light and airy, letting the natural world outdoors take centre stage, and each one has its own veranda overlooking the beautiful butterfly gardens. You’ll be immersed in the rainforest here, as howler monkeys and birds create a soundtrack to remember, and by the firepit at night you’ll hear the region’s myriad amphibians come to life.

Adventures abound here, not just on the footpaths through the forest but up in the trees, too, as this is the home of the country’s first zipline canopy tour, which sees guests whizz through the treetops for an alternative perspective on the wilderness. At the end of each day, finish with dinner at Endémica, where plant-based options are excellent and most of the ingredients on the menu come from the local area.

The impact of your stay:

  • Collectively, the Böëna Wilderness Lodges: Lapa Rios, Pacuare Lodge, Tortuga Lodge, Monteverde Lodge & Gardens, and Cloud Forest Lodge own and protect over 800 hectares of primary and secondary forest in crucial areas near national parks and biological corridors.
  • Through monthly donations, the lodge supports various initiatives of the non-profit organisation Escape Monteverde, facilitating mental health services like camps, youth meetings, and employment training for teenagers. Additionally, the lodge aids the Monteverde Environmental Technology Park in setting up and managing a comprehensive waste treatment system, including wastewater treatment, a solid waste transfer centre for recycling, non-traditional items, and non-recoverable waste, and a productive treatment plant for food waste.
  • Environmental conservation is a core focus for Böëna lodges, including The Cloud Forest Lodge. A significant portion of its 23-hectare property is a private nature reserve in the Bellbird Biological Corridor. Collaborating with researchers and students, the lodge monitors the health of the cloud forest and its species, using the data to enhance regeneration and conservation efforts in Monteverde’s wildlands, including videos of pumas, quetzals, coyotes, and other species in the reserve.
