Self drive experience: Bariloche and beyond

Spend your days in the Lake District exploring at your own pace, as you drive yourself around. Visit some of the best lookouts in Bariloche, taking a scenic drive along what is known as “Circuito Chico” road, and stop to enjoy yet another incredible view from the side of the road at “Punto Panorámico”. Then take a leisurely drive towards Villa la Angostura, a delightful village situated on the banks of the Nahuel Huapi Lake. The village and surrounds are well loved by locals in the summer, and it transforms into a popular ski resort in the winter. Your self-drive adventure will also take you to San Martín de los Andes, the gateway to the forested Lanín National Park.

Days 6–8

Chilean Lake District self drive

The Chilean Lake District is a beautiful region characterised by snow-capped volcanoes, ancient forests and clear-blue waters. Many come here for the outdoor life and its beauty has made it one of the most popular regions to visit. There are all manner of excellent outdoor activities on offer here including some of the best fishing in the world. There are also more relaxing options such as hot springs and beaches around the lakes. You’ll spend the next few days exploring by car as you drive yourself to see the sights and  try the activities that intrigue you most.

Days 8–11

Mythical Chiloé

Shrouded in local myths and legends, Chiloé is Chile‘s second largest island after Tierra del Fuego. Though a relatively unknown and less travelled destination, it has a wild stealing beauty, quaint fishing harbours, and a simple way of south Patagonia life which combine to form a uniquely alluring place. Spend a few days exploring Chiloé’s beautiful countryside of rolling emerald hills, often cloaked in a haze of mist, small picturesque coves and colourful fishing boats bobbing in the harbour. Famous colourful ‘palifito’ houses that are mounted on stilts surround the water’s edge and can be seen dotted around the island.

Days 11–12

World-class wine region

The Wine Regions of Chile surrounding Santiago have become one of the largest and most important wine regions in the world since the introduction of grapes by Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century and the arrival of French immigrants in the 20th. To the north of the Santiago and east of Valparaiso is the Aconcagua Valley, and stretching south of the capital is the Valle Central, itself subdivided into the Maipo, Rapel, Curicó and Maule Valleys. This is a place renowned for its distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Carmenere, and coastal Sauvignon Blancs.

Private picnic lunch in the vineyards

Settle down for a private picnic amidst rolling hills in the heart of Chile’s wine country. With the vineyards stretching out in neat, vibrant green rows, you’ll enjoy delicious local breads, cheeses and treats, accompanied by some of the best Chilean wines. It’s a blissfully unhurried way to bring your fantastic adventure to a close.
