A capital city with incredible cuisine, ancient ruins and vibrant culture

The capital of Jordan, Amman, is a jewel in the crown of the Middle East. A city of fascinating contrasts where ancient ruins loom over modern buildings, galleries, restaurants and boutiques. Not only the largest city in Jordan, it’s also the most populated in the Levant region and is an important political, economic and cultural centre.

Amman is home to impressive ancient ruins that intermingle with modern architecture and daily life. Perched on a hill, overlooking the city is Amman’s Citadel, home to the Roman Temple of Hercules with its seemingly precarious stone beams balancing between the ancient columns. Then there’s the smooth, restored domed roof of the Umayyad Palace, a large palatial complex that dates back to the 8th century.

Just north of the capital are yet more incredible ruins in the city of Jerash. A massive archaeological site with hugely impressive remnants including ceremonial gates, avenues lined with rows of columns, temples and theatres. Roman history is palpable here as the tracks of chariots are still visible on the stone floors.

Jordan’s cuisine is a delicious mix of flavours and Amman is the epicentre when it comes to markets, restaurants, street food and cooking classes. Colourful vegetables and salads, crispy falafels, smooth hummus and marinated meats are just some of delights served up on the streets of this buzzing capital city.

Highlights

Meet with experts in politics and the media to learn about modern-day Amman

Easily spend an entire day wandering the ancient ruins of spell-binding Jerash

Amman is a magical city - there’s a very distinctive buzz and despite its size there's a small-town feel in some of the neighbourhoods. Obviously the ancient ruins here are a huge draw, and for good reason, they are seriously impressive and the way they mingle with the modern city is unusual. The food in Amman is amazing, I’ll never forget some of the buffet lunches and breakfasts I’ve had here - delicious.

When to visit

Temperatures are at their lowest between December and February, with cold winds, rainfall and even snowfall possible because of Amman’s slight elevation. However, provided you’re prepared, you’ll be rewarded with little to no crowds. The summer heat is less intense than lower-lying areas, making exploring year-round possible, however temperatures are more comfortable between March and May, making this a perfect time to explore the Citadel and surrounding forests.
