Itinerary in detail

Every Jacada trip is tailored to your personal preferences and interests. Below you’ll find a sample itinerary to inspire your own custom-designed journey.

Days 1–4

Three nights exploring capital Muscat

Visit Oman’s port capital of Muscat and enjoy it’s highlights on a private tour, including Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, with its 14m-long Swarovski chandelier and the largest hand-woven carpet on Earth. You’ll pass the diplomatic quarter on your way to Old Muscat with its colourful Al Alam Palace which is flanked by two Portuguese forts, Al Mirani and Al Jalali, and you’ll visit Bait Al Zubair Museum. Afterwards, drive along the panoramic corniche to Muttrah Souk, the oldest market in Oman.

From the city

Dive in

Private boat trip along Muscat’s coast

Spend the day exploring Muscat’s beautiful coast, in search of dolphins and stopping at a private bay for lunch on board. Snorkel to coral reefs and keep an eye out for turtles.

Bimmah Sinkhole and Sur

Drive along the coast to the limestone crater Bimmah Sinkhole and afterwards go for a refreshing swim in Wadi Shab. Continue to the fishing town of Sur, home of the traditional Omani dhow boats and dhow factory, and onwards to the turtle reserve.

Days 4–5

Discover Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve

Stay overnight to observe nesting turtles and spend time in the interactive museum at Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve, home to four species of turtle and other wildlife.

The reserve was established here in 1996, with your visit supporting efforts to protect the turtles, conserve their environment and ensure minimise human impact on their nesting process.

En-route to Wahiba

Dhow shipyard visit and hiking in Wadi Shab

As you head towards Wahiba, visit a shipyard that builds traditional wooden dhows without nails or glue according to the old customs. Further on, in Wadi Shab, you will hike between the rocky walls and the abundant vegetation. Refresh yourself in the natural water basins. Swim through a narrow crevasse and you will be surprised by a waterfall in the cave.

Days 5–7

Under the stars in the Omani desert

Head away from the towns and cities into Wahiba Sands for a truly memorable experience of Bedouin life. A few nights in a desert camp will reward you with astounding night skies and wholesome Omani cuisine.

During the day, rippling dunes seem to stretch as far as the eye can see here – some reaching heights of 100m (330ft). At night, with light pollution from cities far away, stars twinkle across the inky black sky. It’s easy to get lost in the desert’s magic.

Desert adventures

Experience Omani hospitality

In the morning you will have time to fully enjoy the silence of the desert. Later, you will have the opportunity to experience Omani hospitality over lunch with a Bedouin family. You will then drive to the famous Wadi Bani Khalid. You will have plenty of time in this evergreen oasis, whose pools, filled with turquoise and sapphire waters, invite you to cool off.

Visit Mudayrib, Nizwa and Birkat Al Mouz

In the village of Mudayrib, a well maintained settlement dating back several hundred years, you can explore Al Kanajirah Fort, the carved town gate, a lively marketplace and the traditional houses. Nizwa, the cultural capital of the country, offers a visit to the souk and fort. After, head to Birkat Al Mouz, a deserted village at the foot of a mountain. This magical place is surrounded by date plantations and an ancient aflaj irrigation system that is a UNESCO heritage site.

Days 7–10

Explore Oman’s wild mountain terrain

The next leg of your trip takes you to the Al Hajar mountains where you can experience the breathtaking beauty of Oman’s landscape from a via ferrata or hiking around Jebel Akhdar, the green mountain that lies 2,000 metres above sea level. The name derives from the fact that the area is one of the most fertile in the country. Apricots, pomegranates, peaches, grapes, almonds and walnuts grow here – and of course the roses that are the base of the popular Omani rose water. In spring, when the roses bloom, visiting a rosewater factory is a special experience.

During your time here, you’ll happen upon mountain villages and ancient irrigation systems, and perhaps take a bike ride through the ancient village of Al Hamra.

Guided cycling in Al Hamra

Meet your bicycle guides in Al Hamra. First, they will take you to Bahla, where you will visit the fort and the pottery souk. Bahla Fort and the surrounding facilities are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Then you will continue to Jabreen Castle, a magnificent castle that dates back to the 17th century.

A via ferrata adventure

For a daring way to experience the breathtaking beauty of Oman’s landscape, set out on a journey that incorporates a section of via ferrata, Italian for ‘iron path’. Then, make your way along the mountain to discover a natural cave that stretches into the mountainside. Step out onto a 20-metre-high rope suspended over the valley below as you make your way across to a secret cave on the other side.

Jebel Akhdar village walk

This hike offers breathtaking views of Jebel Akhdar, through the mountain villages where you will find ancient irrigation systems and green terraces built into the mountainside. You’ll stop at the Saiq Plateau at Diana’s Point (named for the late Princess of Wales who visited by helicopter to marvel at the extraordinary vista).

Days 10–15

Explore the ‘perfume capital of Arabia’

Bring the adventure to a close in Salalah and Empty Quarter with a tour of the city, desert camping, deep night skies and camp fires, and dramatic coastal caves. The city has a rich and intoxicating history and is known for its ancient frankincense trade, with several sites along the Frankincense Road featuring on the UNESCO World Heritage List. During your visit, explore the archaeological park with the ruined city of Al Baleed, a UNESCO world heritage site, and the connecting Salalah Museum; immerse yourself in the fragrances of the orient at Haffa souk; and pass by the Sultan’s beautiful palace.
