Known for its architecture, both Arabic and Islamic, Sharjah is also a cultural and literature hub of the United Arab Emirates. More on the conservative side than other UAE cities, it also offers a range of family-friendly entertainment and activities.
There are 16 museums to discover including several dedicated to archaeology and education. The city is also home to various libraries and cultural centres, and was named UNESCO’s Arab Capital of Culture in 1998.This focus on culture is also evident in the public buildings which were designed by the present Shaikh who is also an architect. Overall the city has a very different look and feel to other Emirates where skyscrapers punctuate the horizon.
Among the highlights in the heritage area are the carefully restored Al Hisn Fort and its museum, Literature Square, Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization and Souq al-Arsa. Many of these sites have visiting hours specifically designated for women.
