Overview
A very elegant boutique hotel in what once was the grand residence of the harbour engineer, the Dock House sits in a prime position next to the Timeball Tower, and all six of its suites looks out onto the city’s second most iconic landmark (after Table Mountain), the V&A Waterfront.
Amidst the bustle of the designer ateliers and boutique stores of the Waterfront, the Dock House has created a sleek and elegant sanctuary with a central lawn to dine out on, take a dip in the pool, and which commands superb views of Table Mountain. The décor throughout is a modern take on traditional neoclassical furniture and style, with neutral dove-grey tones, sparkling chandeliers, and minimal luxury. Each, very spacious suite has a balcony overlooking the Waterfront and the grand suite even had its own garden. With a total of just six rooms, the whole property can in fact be hired for exclusive use.
The service is attentive, the stay is intimate and impeccable, and there is a state of the art spa for some serious indulgence.

Overview
Ellerman House is a class act throughout. It feels very much like your own home but with top class service befitting a five-star hotel. Perched in one of the most spectacular and privileged settings in Cape Town overlooking Bantry Bay, it is the epitome of comfort and class with a relaxed, elegant style. Decoration is colonial, with a nod to the contemporary and recently refurbished to provide thoroughly modern comforts.
Where Ellerman House excels above others is the excellent house staff, who in these grand surrounds create such a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Taking a (complimentary) evening cocktail from the lounge and strolling out onto the peaceful gardens overlooking the sea for sunset is the perfect end to a day in Cape Town as one feels both special and relaxing.
There are just 11 rooms, two suites and two private contemporary villas. Communal areas include a spacious lounge, large garden area (with outdoor pool) and a huge spa. There is an open kitchen you are invited to visit, a pantry that you can raid as well as the complimentary evening cocktails.
A particular feature of the property is its private art collection. This is simply outstanding, one of the best in South Africa with works from African masters inside the main building and then, underneath is a contemporary gallery. For anyone interested in art this will add an extra element to their stay.
Guests are also able to book Sleep Rooms at Ellerman House. A concept created by wellness expert Harry Jameson, each of the 13 rooms at the property can be converted into wellness rooms specially designed to optimise both sleep and recovery.

For a dose of cosy luxury, check in to the Tintswalo Atlantic. Perched right on the edge of the South African shoreline, this boutique hotel is tucked away between the rugged cliffs and gentle waters of Hout Bay, providing you with a degree of isolation from the bustle of Cape Town yet remaining close enough to allow easy access to the area’s sights and activities.
This hotel makes for a great base camp in the region; from here you can enjoy watching the busy local harbor unloading their catch each morning, indulge yourself in some retail therapy at the V&A Waterfront, explore the nearby Constantina Winelands or head slightly further afield and trek through the Table Mountain National Park, just a short car journey away.
There are a host of themed suites to choose from, each with its own individual decor and ambiance. All come with stunning panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean stretching from horizon to horizon. When you’re not sampling the plush bedding, then take a dip in the saltwater pool on the hotel decking, or sip cocktails in the bar at sunset at the waves lap against the shore.

A beach house style property befitting the trendy Camps Bay neighbourhood, intimate, chic and informal, Sea Five also happens to be just 300 metres from the beach, lined with the gourmet restaurants and glamourous bars that this part of the city is so well known for.
Its seven rooms are a homage to the natural seaside style of many Mediterranean villas combined with crisp South Africa refinement: light palettes of white and cream meet rustic linens, simple furnishings and decoration that manages to feel both homely and very un-hotel like.
The penthouse has 360° views of the ocean and mountains, four terraces and two bedrooms. The sea facing classic suites and mountain view superiors come with private terrace, and the garden rooms have their own private garden.
The service is very friendly and the hotel offers bed and breakfast as standard, and exclusive lunches can be served on request in different locations.

Overview
The Grand Dame, heritage property of Cape Town, the Mount Nelson comes with bags of history and is perhaps the most famous hotel in the city. It’s set in large grounds and is made up of a number of different smaller buildings. Most rooms have been refurbished with a contemporary refresh, adding comfort and modern touches to the historic décor. The bar and restaurant have had a similar treatment making them a popular place to visit for Capetonians (a great sign for any hotel restaurant, particularly in the fickle and competitive Cape Town restaurant scene).
From their vermiculture project and on-site beehives, to their use of locally produced organic vegetables, the hotel puts a strong emphasis on having a positive impact on the environment and local community.
Rooms are very comfortable and spacious and are located in several buildings dotted throughout the large property and gardens. This makes it stand apart from other larger hotels in Cape Town as in this most outdoor of cities it’s great to have large, green gardens to take a stroll through and outdoor pools (and for the more active, there are also tennis courts).
Though The Mount Nelson is very much a location in itself, the large grounds sit just a short stroll away from downtown and also the Kloof Street Area, which is famous among locals for excellent new restaurants and boutiques. Afternoon Tea at the Nelson (or Nellie as it is affectionately known) is a Cape Town institution and well worth trying.
→ Find out moreSpend your time relaxing and exploring this wonderful city. You have our top recommendations for activities, restaurants and shopping so that you can make the most of your time here.
You’ll get to experience the best of the Cape Peninsula on this full-day excursion. Visit Cape Point Nature Reserve, stroll along the raised walkways at the Boulders African Penguin Colony in Simonstown, and breathe in the fragrant air as you wander through the beautiful Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.
It’s the perfect way to explore the majestic coastline that early seafarers once called the Cape of Storms. Follow the winding coastal road along the slopes of the towering Twelve Apostles mountains with breathtaking views of the sheltered coves and ocean below you. You’ll pass through the historic fishing village of Hout Bay before making your way over Chapman’s Peak towards Cape Point Nature Reserve. Here you’ll head out to the lighthouse which overlooks the southwestern most point of Africa. Not only is the marine life in the colliding currents below you rich and varied, but the reserve is full of incredible flora and fauna as well.
From there you’ll continue along the False Bay coastline through Simon’s Town, Kalk Bay and Muizenberg, before heading into the lush and fruitful Constantia region where the South African wine industry had its beginnings. From there it’s on to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens where you’ll have the chance to marvel at the plants and flowers that make this part of the world so special.
If you'd prefer to keep your Cape Town activities more central ahead of your Antarctica visit, you might choose to take a half day tour of the city and Table Mountain, instead of taking in the whole peninsula. On this half day tour you’ll get to see some of Cape Town’s best highlights. Your experience will start with a drive to the Castle of Good Hope, the oldest building in South Africa, and take in the Grand Parade where Nelson Mandela addressed the nation when he was released from prison in 1990. From there, take a stroll through the Company’s Garden which was once the fresh produce garden for passing ships in the 17th Century. Nearby, you’ll discover the Iziko South African Museum.
Heading back towards the city centre you’ll pass the Iziko National Gallery, the Houses of Parliament and St George’s Cathedral. Just a short distance away you’ll find yourself in the bustling Greenmarket Square where you can browse for curios at the various stalls.
Your next stop will be the District Six Museum where you can spend time looking at a collection of pictures and memorabilia highlighting the colourful life of the now-demolished suburb. If the museum is open and available to visit, entry is for your own account.
Either in the morning or afternoon, you’ll take a trip up to the top of Table Mountain on the aerial cableway.
During a safety briefing, your camp's representatives will be on hand to offer advice and answer questions about any element of the journey. They will be with you every step of the way, from explaining how the clothing systems work to what you can expect once actually in Antarctica. During this briefing, they will also confirm the exact time of departure for the flight according to the latest weather analysis. Weather can mean that schedules change.

Located in the popular V&A waterfront, the One&Only is the most contemporary of Cape Town’s top hotels. As one might expect from the top luxury resort specialists, the service is excellent.
The very spacious rooms and suites (107) have an elegant style, fabrics and textiles taking an African influence with rich colourful hues. The main hotel area sits around a lagoon in which an island has been created. This is where the outdoor pool, jacuzzis and spa are located, to give more of a ‘resort’ style feel to the hotel. Special Island suites are also available here. Inside the hotel itself there are large communal areas including a vast lobby and bar area as well as restaurants from South African celebrity Chef Reuben Rifell and Nobu.
The resort also has a particularly good kids club, which they can be left in comfortably for the day as the adults go out exploring.
