    The ultimate island getaway

White sandy beaches, sea in every shade of blue imaginable, overwater villas and coconut palms swaying in the breeze – for many, Bora Bora is the epitome of a perfect tropical getaway.

The island of Bora Bora is part of French Polynesia‘s Society Islands. It sits north west of Tahiti and can be reached in under an hour by plane – the flight is an experience in itself. The accommodation in Bora Bora is every bit as breathtaking as you would expect. Overwater villas are a popular choice, from where guests can sit and watch the sun rise and set over the South Pacific and dive straight into the vast ocean which stretches as far as the eye can see.

This volcanic island is set on a lagoon and is surrounded by coral reefs. The sparkling waters are rich in marine life and visitors can explore this vibrant underwater world by snorkelling and diving amongst schools of tropical fish, turtles and rays.

There is something to suit everyone, from experienced divers who wish to travel far out into the ocean, to those who simply like to paddle in the clear waters. The island itself is dominated by Mount Otemanu and the twin-peaked Mount Pahia. While it is tempting not to stray too far from your resort, this lush, green interior is ripe for exploring and you can experience it on a jeep safari or on foot on a guided hike, which is a great way to discover the flora and fauna. You can also take a boat trip out to explore the surrounding islets.

    When to visit

With high temperatures, good weather and exciting festivals throughout the year, there’s not really a best time to visit French Polynesia. It’s great year-round.

The cooler and dryer season runs from March to November, with the arrival of the southeast trade winds. This time of year is known as the Austral winter and brings with it cooler temperatures.
